Fatigue design of PM automotive components

Abstract: Among several competing mass-production methods powder metallurgy plays an important role not only as a material and energy saving alternative, but also as a technique delivering materials with good fatigue properties. The powder metallurgical component design procedure is illustrated by two examples: a conventionally sintered turbocharger bushing and a powder forged parking gear. Both parts were previously designed using conventional wrought steels. The fatigue design method starts out by determining the local strains and stresses in the most critical areas of the parts. Then material selection and component design is carried out. The fatigue strength assessment is verified by fatigue testing under constant and variable amplitude loading.
