Abstract: An automobile is made up of more than 10,000 constituent parts which is indicative of the broad range of related industries that are involved in automobile manufacturing. It also attests to the extremely large number of different materials that are used in the automotive industry as compared with other industries. Vigorous efforts are being made to recycle these materials, and investigations are proceeding on the development of better recycling systems. In this paper, materials recycling in the automotive production process is divided into four categories: (1) intra-production process recycling, (2) intra-company recycling, (3) inter-company recycling, and (4) complex recycling systems. Each category is briefly explained and relevant examples are presented. From the stand-point of the present requirements far resource and energy conservation, improvements need to be made in manufacturing processes and further work should be done on developing technologies for reusing materials.
