A decision making approach for bearing material selection

Abstract: A bearing is interposed between two surfaces in relative motion to minimise the wear by one surface on the other and reduce the friction between them. When contact occurs between two bearing surfaces, behaviour of the bearing material plays an important for its reliable operation. Hence, besides the bearing geometry, bearing kinematics and lubricant, type of the material is quite important for bearing design. Hundreds of bearing materials have been developed with promising individual properties to meet the given service requirements. For a particular bearing, more than one feasible alternative material may exist and in those situations, it is incredibly indispensable to select the most appropriate material with the desired properties for enhanced durability, and minimum operational and maintenance cost for better performance of the bearing. In this paper, ten alternative bearing materials are considered whose performances are evaluated based on nine criteria. Preference ranking organisation method for enrichment evaluation (PROMETHEE II) is applied to solve this bearing material selection problem and a full ranking of the bearing materials is then obtained. High carbon anti-friction bearing steel (SAE 52100) and manganese bronze (C86300) are respectively the best and the worst chosen bearing materials.
