Abstract: In recent years, the concern for cleaner air, along with strict air pollution regulation and the desire to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels have rekindled the interest in hydrogen as a vehicular fuel. Internal combustion engines continue to dominate in many fields like transportation, agriculture and power generation. Diesel engines are the most trusted power sources in the transportation industry. Continuous efforts and tests have tried to reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions of internal combustion engines. Among the various alternative fuels, hydrogen is a long term renewable and less polluting fuel (can also be produced from renewable energy sources). In this experimental investigation, the performance and emission characteristics in dual fuel mode with hydrogen inducted along with air adopting carburetion technique are studied on a direct injection, single cylinder, four-stroke, air-cooled, stationary diesel engine coupled to an electric dynamometer. Results showed that the specific energy consumption was reduced. The brake thermal efficiency was increased by 1.83% and NOx was also increased compared to baseline diesel. Other emissions, such as hydrocarbon, carbon-dioxide and carbon monoxide were reduced by 5.13%, 10% and 21.7% respectively as compared to baseline diesel.
