Abstract: This paper is being presented as an informational paper on the unprecedented challenges the government of Japan is facing in the destruction of large numbers of chemical agent equipped munitions abandoned over fifty years ago in China. There are many complex issues associated with this endeavour. The US national laboratories offer a unique skill set of capabilities to provide assistance to this complex undertaking. A number of technology transfer opportunities are inherent in the proposed assistance. A list of some of these is included as well as background of the undertaking required by the Chemical Convention treaty signed by the Japanese government in 1997.
