Abstract: According to the trains structure, longitudinal stability is as important as lateral. To control sloshing of low-viscosity fluids and its disadvantages, some railway organisations load tank wagons fully. This may lead to axle overload of the railway track and ultimately to derailment. A numerical investigation of the longitudinal behaviour of fluid in a partially filled tanker under braking is presented. For the analysis, the braking distance is simulated and the fluid is modelled by the Euler method. The behaviour of the fluid for different capacities is verified by test. Particularly, a two dimensional tank wagon containing 60% of low-viscosity fluid is considered. Finally, the effects of using baffles on pressure and velocity reduction are investigated.
