Solar cell based DC-DC boost converter for implantable cardiac pacemaker: a computer simulation

Abstract: Operation of implantable medical devices depends on the manner to supply them power for their continuous operation. Currently, life of batteries is limited to provide power for Implantable Cardiac Pacemaker (ICP). Replacement of batteries produces discomfort for patient and high economical costs. There is urgent need to develop an implantable device that can recharge batteries without any external circuitry. In the current research paper, SIMULINK model of DC-DC Boost Converter (DDBC) has been designed and developed that may be employed effectively to charge the battery of the ICP. The solar cells based boost converter can be implanted beneath the skin at a location which receives maximum radiation. The simulation of DDBC resulted a voltage profile of 4 V or above for the input voltage ranging from 1 V to 3 V. The designed boost converter effectively produced the output voltage enough to charge the battery and enhances life of the ICP.
