Abstract: This paper presents a theoretical concept study on the electromagnetic (EM) and shock wave mitigation capability of a novel sandwich armour panel in combat vehicles, which consists of two composite face-sheets and a core made of multi-layered Functionally Graded Foams (FGF). By carefully designing the gradient pattern of the core, the radar and blast wave attenuation performance of the structure can be improved through mathematical modelling and analysis. In this study, analytical models were first developed to predict the EM wave reflection and shock wave transmission of the sandwich structure designed. Based on the analytical models, a parametric study was performed to investigate the effect of gradient pattern on each of the two design objectives, and then a multi-objective optimisation was conducted to generate the optimal design. This new approach makes it possible to develop a multi-functional lightweight armour plate for military combat vehicle against radar surveillance systems and blast attack in battlefields.
