Abstract: An investigation of mechanically stimulated self-propagating reactions (MSR) has been carried out for different conditions of mechanical activation in the Zn-S-Sn system. The obtained results are generalised with focus on the determination of induction period preceding the ignition of MSR. The densities of heat sources at impact-friction contacts of zinc particles coated with sulphur were calculated based on an anomalous increase in sulphur viscosity caused by its polymerisation taking into account the heat effect of ZnS formation. The obtained densities of heat sources of 'viscous flow' and 'chemical reaction' were comparable with the density of 'dry friction' sources in the order of magnitude. The principal parameter of MSR, the induction period of the ignition of combustion, was numerically calculated taking into account the heat effects of chemical reactions. Accompanying phenomena and MSR features are studied and discussed. The results were compared with experimental data on the Zn-S system.
