A theoretical study of the hydro-pneumatic semi-active suspension system with preview

Abstract: In recent years, great attention has been concentrated on the design of semi-active suspension systems from the point of view of improving vehicle ride comfort. In this paper, a preview hydro-pneumatic semi-active suspension system of a quarter car model moving along a randomly profiled road surface is investigated. The computer program which controlled the hydro-pneumatic semi-active suspension system was designed only to dissipate energy. Track irregularities are measured by sensors in front of the vehicle, and this information is used by the computer-controlled hydro-pneumatic semi-active suspension system. This means that the deformation of the track can be taken into account when calculating the semi-active control loop. The practical limitations involving hydro-pneumatic semi-active time delay and dead time delay values are considered Theoretical results for the performance of a passive, hydro-pneumatic semi-active suspension with and without the preview version, are compared. It is shown that the hydro-pneumatic semi-active suspension system, with and without preview, offers worthwhile improvements over the passive suspension system.
