Interdisciplinary Environmental Review (IER), Vol. 14, No. 1, 2013

Abstract: This study was conducted during 2011-2012 with the objective to assess the ambient air quality in the surroundings of a newly constructed road in relation to Pakistan's Environmental Quality Standard (Pak-NEQS). The area was monitored twice, before and during the construction, to determine levels of sulphur dioxide, nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide, and PM10 (particulate matter). A significant increase in these gaseous pollutants was observed but levels did not exceed that set by Pak-NEQS. Even with a further increase of 100% will be below the Pak-NEQS standard. Only the value of PM10 exceeded Pak-NEQS. The implication for ambient air quality is that it must be stringent to avoid morbidity and for abatement of the area's pollution levels. The promulgation of NEQS should be in accordance with the new scientific evidence.
