An academic model for interdisciplinary environmental education and problem solving in Costa Rica: a case study of the School for Field Studies

Interdisciplinary Environmental Review (IER), Vol. 7, No. 1, 2005

Abstract: The School for Field Studies-Center for Sustainable Development Studies in Costa Rica (SFS-CSDS) offers interdisciplinary environmental education through a five year research plan, directed research projects, case studies, field exercises, and courses. Implementation of the Areas under Protection aspect of the SFS-CSDS academic model has resulted in enhanced relationships between park managers and communities, and collaborative agreements with government agencies. Academic model limitations, such as student credit transfer, are addressed through program quality monitoring and integrating SFS courses into university curriculum. These and other insights are presented to help higher education and other study abroad institutions adopt similar academic models.
