Integrating environmentally focused experiential learning into the curriculum: an interdisciplinary case study

Abstract: This paper details the use of a local environmental issue as a case study for an interdisciplinary project in an Economics and an English course. Students in The Economics of Social Issues and two sections of Honors Communications were given the option to undertake an analysis of the environmental, economic, social, and health impacts of the proposed expansion of the Seaview Avenue industrial corridor in Bridgeport, Connecticut, for a local community group and a regional economic development group. The project and the study's results are described in detail. Finally, suggestions for utilising local environmental issues as opportunities for experiential learning in a number of disciplines are provided.
