Abstract: The 1973-1978 workgroup on money of the Italian Workerist journal Primo Maggio aimed to change the social role of political intellectuals by innovating the methodology of historiography, sociology, economics and political science. Its research focused on the Marxian analysis of money in relation to theoretical and political impulses provided by the monetary disorder of the 1970s. The material produced by the workgroup significantly helps in creating a logical scheme which pinpoints the functions of money in a capitalist system. A link between the workgroup's reflection and the modern theory of monetary circuit is suggested. It is also explained why such a group represents an example of pluralist critique of political economy.
