Environmental issues: the role of institutions and firm strategy

Abstract: The world's environmental crises are becoming more apparent with advances in scientific research and technology. The issues are now more salient than ever, but just having the information that problems exist is not sufficient. We, as a society, must commit to addressing these issues immediately, before natural resources dry up, the planet's climate is changed, and the world's population multiplies exponentially, just to name a few environmental imperatives. This paper will examine the role of institutions and firms in environmental issues and give examples of how firms are capitalising on country specific advantages (CSAs) and firm specific advantages (FSAs) for both environmental sustainability and increased competitiveness. Ultimately, the paper is a call to action for all environmental stakeholders to be a part of the solution towards global sustainability.
