A framework to analyse the competence to innovate complex product systems in the stored program control switchboard industry

Abstract: Traditional concepts of managing product innovation are not suitable for innovation in complex products and systems (CoPS). This paper argues that the fifth generation or system integration and networking (SIN) process model is relevant for developing CoPS. The SIN model determinants are identified and tested in stored program control (SPC) switchboard manufacturing firms. These firms need specific management competence for developing and integrating the diverse switchboard system components developed within network of several organisations. A research framework for evaluating a firm's competence to manage CoPS innovation is proposed that integrates 18 elements specifying the internal and external key resources as well as technological and supportive capabilities required for innovation in the SPC switchboard manufacturing industry.
