Abstract: The history of dual derricks is introduced briefly. Theory of optimal design for dual derricks is given. Taking the least weight as an optimal goal, the optimal model of a dual derrick is established and optimal design variables are set. Optimal design is done under six different operation conditions. The optimal procedure is given and the optimal structure analysed. By optimal design, the weight of the dual derrick can be reduced by about 10%.
