Thermodynamic assessment of an integrated system for cogeneration and district heating and cooling

International Journal of Exergy (IJEX), Vol. 1, No. 1, 2004

Abstract: A thermodynamic assessment is reported of a proposed system, for which advanced engineering designs have been developed for integrating cogeneration with district heating and cooling. The system was developed by Edmonton Power for the city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Energy and exergy analyses are used to attain a more complete thermodynamic understanding. The results provide a better understanding of the thermodynamic efficiencies and losses, in terms of energy and exergy, associated with the Edmonton System, and may assist in efforts to improve the design of the Edmonton system and other related systems. The results also help establish key thermodynamic principles relating to the integration of systems for cogeneration and district cooling, and provide measures of efficiency for such integrated systems.
