Abstract: This paper proposes an automatic detection method of optic nerve head (also called optic disk) using two dimensional improved directional matched filter with improved pre-processing and post-processing techniques. The blood vasculature is removed using optimised Gaussian filter after normalising retinal fundus images using an adaptive histogram equalisation technique. The blood vessel segmentation is improved by adopting a thresholding technique based on blood vessel properties. Then optic disk is extracted from the retinal fundus image and its area is calculated. Classification of normal and abnormal images is carried out based on the optic disk properties.
