Abstract: In this work the effects of the flushing types on rotary electro discharge machining (REDM) performance were studied when the material was alloy steel of X210Cr12. Some experiments with different values of discharge current, pulse-on time, rotational speed of the electrode and different shape of electrode were conducted. Different flushing types were performed using three shape of electrode: without hole, with one eccentric hole and with two symmetric eccentric holes. Then the effects of flushing types on the material removal rate (MRR), tool wear rate (TWR) and workpiece surface roughness (WSR) were evaluated. Results show that the flushing types have significant effects on EDM performance when the machining debris is coarse and the EDM performance is almost constant for fine debris machining condition. Also a back-propagation neural network (BPNN) was used to correlate the input and output parameters using the data generated based on experimental observations. Comparison of the predicted values and experimental results show that the proposed model has an acceptable performance to prediction of the machining performance.
