Statistical design approach to process parameter optimisation for turning AISI 9310 alloy steel under minimum quantity lubrication environment

Abstract: In this study, general full factorial design was used as a statistical design of experiment method to develop mathematical models relating turning performance factors and turning process parameters and hence, to find out the optimal settings of process parameters for MQL turning. The developed models were tested for adequacy using analysis of variance and other adequacy measures. The optimal settings of turning parameters were determined based on two criteria: minimisation of chip-tool interface temperature as well as surface roughness, and maximisation of reduction in cutting force (%) and cutting speed. A cutting speed and feed rate in the range of 303-312 m/min and 1.3-1.4 mm/rev, respectively with a depth of cut of 1.5 mm were identified as the optimal set of process parameters. However, the range of cutting speed can be increased to 360-363 m/min at a feed rate of 1.3 mm/rev to obtain even better and low cost machined surface.
