Abstract: The potential for solvent extraction using Cyanex®272 for the recovery of zinc from spent automobile tyre ash after prior leaching in hydrochloric acid has been investigated. Experimental data for the dissolution rates have been analysed with the shrinking core model for diffusion control with the surface chemical reaction as the rate controlling step. An extraction yield of 93.42% zinc by 0.032M Cyanex®272 was obtained from 10 g/L spent automobile tyre ash leach liquor at 25 ± 2°C and a stirring time of 25 min. Finally, stripping efficiency of about 92% of zinc from the organic phase was achieved.
