Abstract: A small wind turbine simulator based on a separately excited DC motor-permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) set has been proposed to evaluate the performance of the small wind turbine model. A DC shunt motor is used to produce varying aerodynamic power by varying field current with the help of an IGBT switch. The simulator is an equivalent gearless wind turbine model that fluctuate aerodynamic power directly with wind speed. Power developed from the generator is transferred to the load through a buck-boost converter. The converter controls the output voltage in respect of higher or lower input voltage. To achieve constant voltage and transfer maximum power across the load in respect of the wind variations, a controller is designed which ensure that the instantaneous power generated by the PMSG tracks the theoretical power calculated. The results are validated using PSCAD/EMTDC simulation studies.
