Abstract: A mean value model for calculating the exhaust temperature drop of an internal combustion engine is developed in this paper, from which a simple general formula is derived. Using the one-dimensional engine simulation software GT-POWER, the pending parameters in the general formula are determined particularly for a two-stroke spark ignition (SI) engine with good correlation and precision. Then the formula is verified by experimental results. The errors between calculated results and experimental data are less than 1% at high speed, and 2% at low speed. Although the error in middle engine speed can reach 8%, this model is appropriate to be used in the engineering applications, such as exhaust system design and turbocharging system match. In addition, this model is simple enough to be embedded into the engine management system. The factors that influence the exhaust temperature drop are also discussed.
