Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to discuss the effect of the HIPAA security standards on the electronic transmission and maintenance of health-related data in management information systems. Administrative considerations from the perspective of the laboratory, issues pertaining to information systems security, and managerial responsibilities regarding implementation of the HIPAA security standards will be addressed.
