From the architect to the organisational architect: modelling organisational domains in the empty, programming or inhabited space of strategy

International Journal of Work Organisation and Emotion (IJWOE), Vol. 4, No. 1, 2011

Abstract: As an activity theorist, Engestrom (2004) makes the distinction between making joint decisions and modelling. Borrowing from the sociology of architecture, our aim is to put those two worlds into fruitful interplay with one another in an organisational setting. We propose in this paper to revise certain contributions from the strategic management literature around three configurations (ideal-types) of the space of the strategy (Lejeune, 1994). Along the journey, we will discuss some aspects of the Organisation Modelling (OM) approach, an approach concerned with both the hard and soft dimensions of the organisation architecture (Morabito et al., 1999).
