Abstract: This paper presents the mathematical modelling and statistical analysis of load bearing ability of the cryogenically treated interference fitted assemblies. Experiments were conducted based on the central composite rotatable design to collect the data in a controlled way. Central composite rotatable design involving two parameters – interference and soaking time of pins each at five levels is used. To identify the significance of parameters, analysis of variance (ANOVA) has been adopted. The aim is to establish a relationship between the load bearing ability and the parameters. The results reveals that the load bearing ability of such assemblies increases with increase in interference and the effect of higher soaking time of pin at cryogenic temperature influences little on load bearing ability. Further, the developed mathematical model can be used to predict the load bearing ability (kN) of interference fitted assemblies. Lastly, confirmation tests were conducted to verify the experimental results with the developed model.
