Abstract: Information technology has been used as a key strategic resource to sustain companies' competitive positions. As a supportive system or infrastructure, the IT role is well explored and understood, but its use for generating new business opportunities is relatively unexplored. IT management complexity is not only explained by technological alternatives available, but also by its close relationship with organisational changing processes and its contribution to strategy development. Enterprises are studying new organisational design models and solutions to deal with IT complexity and to better explore its strategic potential. This paper study alternatives for IT organisational design, based on operations strategy requisites. The proposed concepts are tested in a case study that explores a real organisational design revision process and its integration to the company operations strategy. The presented results organise the discussion about the IT role in operations, using an operations strategy framework. Organisational design review recommendations emerge from this discussion, essentially founded in IT and operations strategy alignment.
