Abstract: The Norwegian Ministry of Education, Research and Church Affairs has established the Norwegian School Net as a service for primary and secondary education, including teachers, students, parents and everybody else involved in education at this level. The School Net was officially opened on the 15 October 1996, and has developed continuously ever since. The most substantial element of the School Net is perhaps the collection of online educational resources, the so-called didactic modules, that have been developed by practicing teachers on the initiative of and sponsored by the Ministry of Education. There are also discussion forums for various interest groups within the school society, and an online in-service ICT centre to give schools practical, technical and didactic advice on using ICT in teaching. A recent addition to the School Net is a purely online magazine, which will publish articles, features, columns, readers' contributions and other news items relating to the field of education and learning. The School Net cooperates with the Nordic School Data Network and the European Schoolnet. In addition, this article ventures to examine whether the good intentions on a national level might eventually be lost in cyberspace.
