Abstract: The Australian wine industry is facing one of its greatest challenges in living memory – to compete on a global stage with quality wines that are accessible to the mass market, without jeopardising the livelihoods of wine producers, the communities they serve or the environment upon which they rely. This paper explores the potential for co-innovation as an approach for building sustainable competitive advantage in one of Australia's most important grape producing regions – the Riverland. A case study of the Oxford Landing value chain is presented using sustainable value chain analysis, the results from which identify the need for more effective collaboration between policy makers, industry associations and commercial businesses in order to create a closer alignment between resource allocation, environmental management and consumer value.
