Sampling proficient e-communicators in an online environment

Abstract: This paper discusses the rationale, method and level of success of an experimental sampling method used by the e-learning for learners (E4L) project for the selection of proficient e-communicators. The E4L project focused on the learners' experience of e-learning from adult and community learning, further and higher education. The project focuses on effective e-learners. However, a clear definition of what an effective e-learner is not identified in the literature. It was decided to sample those who are proficient e-communicators as communication is acknowledged in the literature as playing a key role in effective learning. This was achieved through the use of a virtual learning environment which hosted tasks associated with communication and based on a modification of Salmon's five step model.
