Collecting experiences as vacationers' philosophy
by Leon Zurawicki
International Journal of Tourism Policy (IJTP), Vol. 3, No. 3, 2010

Abstract: This paper proposes a novel approach to address the motivations of vacationers. Focusing on a select group of travellers who repeatedly indulge in the same activities, the author develops a conceptual approach distinguishing such a segment from the general population. Viewing tourists as collectionists highlights their involvement and dedication to the activity of their choice leading to a distinct consumer behaviour pattern. It is proposed that the collectionists have more specific vacation expectations and a richer base to evaluate their experiences. They are seeking accomplishment and pride and are an important source of the word of mouth. Implications for the travel industry and the topics for the future research are discussed.
