Abstract: Biometric techniques exploit the human physiological and behavioural traits for verification and identification purposes. Biometrics powered systems make effective use of the face, fingerprint, iris etc. as physiological and signature, gait, posture and voice recognition as behavioural metrics for identification. This paper explains the inadequacy of uni-modal strategies and the pressing need for a multimodal system. The concerns over the cost effectiveness of current multimodal strategies are discussed and a novel tier-based solution is proposed. In this paper, we use a face-ear multimodal biometric framework to demonstrate the efficiency of the tier-based approach and to discuss the template storage aspects.
