Achieving quality in finite element analysis

Abstract: Following the expansion in the use of computer methods throughout industry,finite element methods have emerged as the leading design and validation technique. However, the great increase in the use of themethod has been undisciplined and in many industries the reliance placed on the results may be misplaced. There are many sources of error which are hidden from the analyst and the designer. These may be inherent in the analysis systems being used, or result from lack of skill or experience of the analyst. The paper outlines an initiative in the UK to produce a standards framework in which the method can develop, and which should lead to improved quality and safety of engineering design.
