Abstract: Finely dispersed TiB2 is synthesised by reacting a powder mixture of Ti, B and Al in the molar ratio of 1:4:1 and the grain size of the synthesized TiB, is < 0.5µm. which is much smaller than that obtained from the reaction of a powder mixture of Ti, B and Al in the molar ratio 1:(n+2):0 or 1:Z:n (n = 0, 1.2 or 3). It is estimated that, in the case of the Ti+4B+Al, the reaction of Al-B system following TiB2 combustion synthesis would generate the excess heat behind the combustion front, resulting in long keeping time at high temperatures. The net effect is that the nucleation of TiB2 increases much more than that in other situations studied.
