Abstract: The process of designing of Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMSs) is one of the Floor Layout Problems (FLPs) with added system-specific constraints. The problem is recognised as suitable for solving with Genetic Algorithms (GAs). In the paper, the solution of row-based FMS based on GAs is presented. The model consists of system-specific coding, where organism carries only a very general description of the layout. Additional technological constraints are added in the process of decoding the organism into the layout. In this way, the most favourable number of rows and the sequence of devices in the individual rows are established.
