Abstract: This paper proposes the finite element method, as well as the energy-based Rayleigh-Ritz approach, for optimization of the press frame with buckling constraint. In the finite element method, the geometric stiffness matrix is derived; second order nonlinear strain terms are incorporated into the governing energy equation. On the other hand, in the Rayleigh-Ritz approach, the suitable buckling displacement functions satisfying the boundary conditions are presented. Then, the numerical results obtaified from these two approaches are compared with the field data to ascertain validity.
