New product development and commercialisation at SK Chemical

Abstract: This is a case study of TRAST, an anti-arthritis patch medicine that SK Pharma has developed over the years. The case demonstrates how the cross-boundary coordination of technology transfer, using the method of 'asset matching' between firms and individuals, can be successful despite qualms of various governance issues. SK Pharma has overcome difficulties of governance in knowledge transfers through the asset matching by carrying out follow-up research in an effort not only to master new knowledge, but also to improve it for local application. The case demonstrates that SK Chemical has surmounted internal politics between R&D, marketing and production teams through nurturing malleable skills among team leaders.
