Abstract: Five indigenous hydrophytes were studied for removal of nitrogen and phosphorus at different nutrition levels by artificial imitation of the low-temperature weather conditions of the Taihu lake area. The rate of nitrogen and phosphorus uptake was dependent on the nutrient concentrations and a positive correlation between the prolines of hydrophytes and the latter were found. High percentages of nitrogen and phosphorus removal were obtained for the perennial emergent herbage O. javanica and the perennial submersed herbage P. Maackianus. In addition, a high level of prolines means that these two herbages have the strongest resistivity among the five species studied.
