Abstract: One of the top considerations for small- and medium-sized firms in today's global economy is to strategise how to handle global competition and take the lead in the game. This paper was based on a series of three studies over five years investigating the fundamental change of a former Chinese state-owned enterprise, Huatao Ltd., in its course of becoming a capable organisation with multiple competences and achieving global leadership in its industry. This study suggests that actions of small- and medium-sized companies can result in best practices for firms evolving rapidly into competitive, market-driven enterprises in the global arena.
