Synthesis, characterisation of SiO2 and TiO2 coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles for biomedical applications

Abstract: Silica and titania coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles Fe3O4(1)-SiO2 and Fe3O4(2)-TiO2 were prepared using thermal hydrolysis method. The structure of the core-shell nanostructures was determined by FT-IR and XRD analysis. FT-IR spectra for Fe3O4(1)-SiO2 and Fe3O4(2)-TiO2 show peaks corresponding to the stretching vibrations of Si-O and Ti-O groups, respectively. The surface modification of Fe3O4 nanoparticles with SiO2 or TiO2 did not lead to their phase change as confirmed by XRD diffraction analysis. Additionally, both samples show ferromagnetic behaviour as the saturation magnetisation values for Fe3O4(1)-SiO2 and Fe3O4(2)-TiO2 samples decrease by 20% and 33%, respectively with an increase in the shell thickness by 10 nm and 2 nm, respectively.
