Development of semi-independent type continuously variable damper system by performance evaluation of full vehicle test

Abstract: The continuous semi-active suspension system is highlighted as an effective suspension system with improvement of ride comfort and driving safety among the intelligent suspension systems. Lately, the reverse damper system on the basis of the skyhook damper theory is introduced by the name of ''Active Damper Suspension'' to us. This system has an outstanding performance in contrast to passive and adaptive suspension systems, and besides, it has excellent cost-efficiency, low energy consumption, and light weight in comparison with active suspension systems. In this viewpoint, most of the carmakers will adopt this system in the near future. We developed an semi-independent type continuously variable damper system, which is activated by a step motor in 16 steps and controlled by a high performance 16-bit ECU with a hybrid filter and velocity estimator. This paper describes several important points of development procedure for realising this system with experimental results which obtained by bench test and full vehicle test in proving ground.
