Differences in perceptions of effective schools processes in differentially effective schools in China

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to advance our understanding of educational effectiveness processes within contexts where those issues have seldom been studied in the field: rural and urban areas in China. Utilising a mixed methods 'contextually sensitive' school effectiveness research design, we collected questionnaire and other data to address our research hypotheses and questions. Multivariate analyses of variance with traditional school effectiveness indices as the dependent variables revealed consistent results: significant differences between more effective and less effective schools, as well as between urban and rural schools. Qualitative data indicated unique aspects of educational effectiveness in China.
