Reengineering the process in the design of object-orientation using concepts of industrial engineering

Abstract: Interest in object-orientation (OO) has been increasing in recent years due to the benefits accrued from its use in developing software applications. However, several shortcomings are associated with the design phase of OO, which could adversely impact its effectiveness. Elements of the process related to design by OO such as objects, classes, methodologies, diagrams, and models, should therefore be reengineered in order to enhance the application of OO, and help overcome several of the difficulties encountered. Such a task could be attempted concurrently with modelling an application domain by OO using concepts from industrial engineering related to the design of products and processes. These concepts include concurrency, reduction, standardisation, modularity, and accounting for the users. This paper discusses several of the problems associated with elements of the process related to the design phase of OO, and presents examples on overcoming them using concepts from IE.
