How service science management and engineering (SSME) can evolve to an academic discipline?

Abstract: IBM proposed in 2004, the study of services as an academic discipline, referred to as service science management and engineering (SSME), which is currently the object of study in universities and industry. However, the development of SSME as an academic discipline has been relatively slow. This paper reviews the current status of SSME in the universities and industry in the USA and points to relationships among government, universities, and industry that are necessary for the development of SSME as an academic discipline.
