Pricing and cost recovery of urban water supply in Mangalore City Corporation area – a case study

Abstract: The increased demand for water and supply gap in the growing cities has become currently a debatable issue in India. Similarly, the problem of financing these services by ULBs have been experiencing in most of the cities. Thus, the need to advocate the reasons of investment and the cost recovery gaps and the pricing mechanism system generally followed to recover the revenue from such investment in growing cities attains significance. Keeping this broad perspective, an effort is made in this paper to examine the issues related to the pricing and cost (revenue) recovery mechanism practiced in a corporation city. The study carried out with the support of available secondary and the field level primary data. The study brought out the different aspects related to the problem of water provisions and the dimensions of pricing mechanism prevailed and experienced in a growing corporation city like Mangalore in Karnataka, India.
