Abstract: In this paper, some tendencies are shown in the way postgraduate education is organised at the MPEI – one of the largest institutes of higher education in the USSR, educating engineering and scientific and pedagogical personnel, not only for the USSR, but also for other countries. An analysis is presented of the system of postgraduate education at MPEI, its structure, its main fields of activity, and the principles according to which it is organised and financed. Having analysed the results of the activity of this system, which is dependent on the way the country is governed, a number of advantages and disadvantages are pointed out concerning postgraduate education. In conclusion, the authors present their concept of a postgraduate education. They discuss ways to implement this concept at the MIT, and consider the potential contribution of their institute to the establishment of a system of continuous education that would be compatible with the USSR's transition to a market economy.
