Continuing Engineering Education at IBM
by Gerald J. Balm
International Journal of Continuing Engineering Education and Life-Long Learning (IJCEELL), Vol. 1, No. 1, 1990

Abstract: The author presents a short background on corporate education in the USA from a recently published study by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The report summarises the magnitude of education provided by US industry and estimates, it to be roughly equal to all the education provided by all US colleges and universities. The author then speculates on some of the reasons why so much education is provided by industry. The paper includes demographic information on the number and diversity of IBM employees. The demographics are used to point out the problem of a very broad and varied need for continuing education in the IBM Corporation. The solution to this broad problem is described in terms of the many educational opportunities provided for its employees. Also discussed are some education-oriented programs sponsored by IBM to strengthen university educational opportunities for its employees.
