Abstract: The historical forces shaping continuing engineering education (CEE) in Japan since the Second World War are reviewed, along with its present characteristics. The author states his view that the conventional pattern of engineering education in schools and universities will not be sufficient to meet future needs, and that CEE will be required to keep pace with rapid developments in technology and to develop the potential and abilities of engineers in industry.
