Abstract: The United States Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) on behalf of the Department of Defense has funded the US-Japan Industry and Technology Management Training (JITMT) Program involving universities in merit-based competition since 1991 to increase understanding of the Japanese technology management practice. The main objective of this program is to upgrade the US industrial infrastructure by increasing the rate of investment in training and research dissemination. This paper gives an overall assessment of the ability of the program to organise and promote the exchange of research and industrial training in such a way as to engage US government agencies and firms with their Japanese counterparts. The strategy for interaction includes a large number of topical symposia, workshops, distance education, teleconferencing, and training via internship programs.
